Shopify Homepage Design: What to Put Above the Fold (and What to Cut)
Most Shopify homepages are designed to impress, not to convert. The homepage's job is to route the right visitor to the right product as quickly as possible—not to showcase your brand story in eleven sections.
What the homepage actually does
Analytics consistently show that the homepage has the lowest conversion rate of any page on your Shopify store. New visitors arrive from ads, social, or search with a product or category in mind—the homepage either routes them there fast or loses them to a bounce. Returning customers skip the homepage entirely and head directly to products or search. Design for those two behaviors, not for a brand narrative that only you find compelling.
Hero section design
The homepage hero should make three things instantly clear: what you sell, who it is for, and what to do next. One sentence, one image or video, one button. The most common homepage mistake is a full-screen lifestyle video with a vague tagline like 'Live Better.' It is beautiful and says nothing. Replace it with 'Premium merino base layers for cold weather—free shipping over $75' and a CTA to your best-selling collection.
- Headline: what you sell + primary differentiator.
- Subheadline: who it is for or the key proof point.
- CTA: to your top collection or best-seller, not 'Explore.'
- Image: lifestyle showing the product in use by your target customer.
Routing visitors to products
Below the hero, show your primary collections as visual tiles—not text links. A shopper who sees an image of the exact product category they want clicks through faster than one who reads a list. Limit to four to six category tiles. If your catalog is small, feature your top three to five individual products directly. Every additional decision point below these primary tiles competes with conversion.
What to cut ruthlessly
The average Shopify homepage has eleven to fourteen sections. Most should be removed or moved to About or dedicated landing pages: the founder story (move to About), Instagram feed (low conversion, high load weight), 'Our Values' section (belongs on About or a sustainability page), excessive testimonial carousels (pick the best two and show them statically). If a section does not route visitors toward a product or reduce a purchase anxiety, it is slowing your homepage down.
Homepage SEO basics
Your homepage H1 should include your primary keyword—what your store sells—not your brand name alone. 'Relay — AI Customer Support for Shopify' is better than 'Relay' because it tells Google and first-time visitors exactly what you do. Keep your meta description under one hundred sixty characters and lead with the primary benefit. Your homepage title tag is the most important SEO asset on your site.
